絲光棉面料一般是含棉的，但含量可以是100%棉、部分棉混紡其他成分，如聚酯纖維(滌綸)、尼龍(錦綸)、氨綸等成分。即使是不含棉纖維的絲光面料也不少見。

結構性能：純棉橫截面為不規則橢圓形，絲光棉橫截面為圓形。純棉的縱截面自然扭曲，絲光棉的表面皺紋消失，變得光滑。

物理性能：絲光棉光澤度優于純棉(絲光后表面光滑，光的漫反射少)，強度高于純棉(自然扭曲消失，纖維排列緊密，抱合力增加)，尺寸穩定性高于純棉(纖維素分子重排，消除原有內應力)。

化學性能：絲光棉的反應性提高(無定形區增大，羥基隨著主價鍵的轉動由不可及變為可及)，對水、碘、氫氧化鋇和染料的吸附能力大于純棉。

其實絲光棉也是屬于純棉，只是比純棉多了一個絲光工藝，這是工藝上的區別。絲光棉一般用于制作高檔POLO衫和T恤，所以使用的面料一般是新疆棉和高檔美棉，純棉是普通棉，這是原料的區別。
